You’ve made it this far! The first step to seeking counseling can oftentimes be the hardest. And here you are reading this, trying to decide if it all feels right. I am here to tell you that this initial action of yours was brave. Own that before you keep reading. I’m serious.
Anyway, hi! My name is Katie, and I want to start by saying I am here to be real with you. Authenticity is my absolute jam. If we can’t be perfectly honest with each other, what are we even doing? Not going to lie: being a person is hard. Like, really hard. And interestingly enough, I have observed this abundance of silly stigma around even the most common of human experiences. Anxiety, shame, and hell–just struggling to get out of bed in the morning can feel taboo. LET’S BE CLEAR: it’s not! You’re not alone in how you feel. You are human. We are designed to feel the whole gamut of emotions; none of them are “bad”. Just human. I would be honored to help you make sense of those big feelings, and to help hold some of the load that you are carrying. Therapy is a partnership. It is a relationship where two equals come together to collaborate. I would love to problem solve with you. Bring me all of your weird. That’s what makes you, you.
My counseling approach aims to be person-centered and trauma-informed; utilizing CBT, ACT, and Gestalt theoretical perspectives as they fit for each unique individual. I describe myself as an eclectic clinician. I find that this allows me to practice through a broad lens to best meet your needs. Historically, I have worked with middle school aged kids, teens, young adults, and those in all of the different phases of adulthood. I have cultivated the philosophy that who and what needs to find you always will, which has rung true with the populations I’ve had the pleasure of serving in my career. I believe that my past clients and I have found each other energetically. I think this is just lovely, and has allowed us to do some beautiful work together. ALL of my work is inclusive, and I will forever continue to be as multi-culturally competent as I possibly can be. I actively aim to unlearn the inevitable yet harmful lessons that have been conditioned into a white-passing person with privilege such as myself. I realize that this is not only a lifelong process, but a choice. I make it my mission to wake up every single day and choose this.
Some populations I love working with include:
-Middle Schoolers + Teens
-Parents (single + co-parenting)
-LGBTQ+ community
-Those in need of Perinatal Mental Health support
Since moving forward would mean entering a therapeutic alliance with me, I believe it is only fair that you get some sense of who I am. I am a WNC native, born to an immigrant and adopted by a U.S. citizen. I am multi-racial (Cuban and White). I experienced loss at a young age, and am no stranger to grief. I am a Taurus sun, Cancer moon, and Cancer rising. I’m an INFP that can wear the extrovert hat when the right occasion calls for it. I am a (slow) runner and a (tap) dancer by nature. I’m a wife. I’m a mother. I’m a child. I’m a lover. (Meredith Brooks, anyone? Anyone???) I really love movies and music. My favorite films range from Fire Walk With Me to Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure. I regret never having been in David Bowie’s presence, but hey–at least I managed to exist on this planet at the same time as the man. I believe that counseling is my true calling, but I like to think that I would have been a Pop Culture Jeopardy champion in another life. When I am not working, I am in pursuit of finding the perfect French Fry. I am learning this is a life-long venture. Additionally, I love spending time with my wonderful partner, my hilarious 10-year-old, inquisitive 7-year-old, and infant/fun-sized baby girl. They sure do keep me on my toes in the best way imaginable. My cat Bastian is my best boy. My cat Lilith is my spiritual advisor. And my goofy dog Linus (who looks like Dobby the house elf) is pretty cool too.
I believe that successful therapy happens when counselor and client truly connect. Carl Rogers once said that safe relationships heal, and I put forth every effort as your therapist to collaborate with you on your healing journey. It is my intention to create both a literal and figurative safe environment to hold space for you. It is my honor to hear your story and witness your vulnerability.
I would love to hear from you. Please reach out for a free consultation, and let’s see if we vibe.
